SCHOLARSHIPS

National Institute of Genetics (NIG) / Department of Genetics, SOKENDAI offers a research internship program for undergraduate and graduate students who wish to gain research experience in genetics and related fields in the life sciences. Interns will conduct independent research under the mentorship of a host investigator at NIG.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be interested in life sciences and be in the preliminary year at the time of application, that is, in the third year of a 4-year bachelor program, in the second year of a degree program. 3-year bachelor’s degree, in the fourth year of a 5-year program, in the first year of a 2-year master’s program, or the fifth year of a 6-year program. Students who are interested in enrolling in our doctoral program at NIG are encouraged to apply.

* Due to a highly competitive selection process, applications from non-prefinal students and students in a Ph.D. course are not considered.

* The selection is highly competitive. Twelve bright students were selected from more than 2,200 applications for 2021. The number of applicants selected varies from year to year.

* The online application system opens on November 26, 2021, and closes at noon on January 7, 2022 (Japan Standard Time, JST)

* Students interested in applying for this program must read, understand and agree to the requirements of the program.

* Due to the overwhelming number of requests, we do not respond to individual inquiries about this website, selection status, and results.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
NIG will cover a round-trip airfare between the intern’s place of residence and Japan, a round-trip transportation fee between the Japan airport and NIG
Accommodation fees in the institute’s guest house and travel insurance during the program.

NOTE: NIG will not cover living and miscellaneous expenses other than the above and interns must pay these costs themselves.

INTERNSHIP PERIOD
June 16 – July 27, 2022

Our program includes scientific research training, scientific communication, and laboratory visits to discuss with individual principal investigators. At the end of the program, interns will give a presentation about their experience at the “NIGINTERN Reporting Symposium”. NIG will issue a certificate to those who have completed the program. Interns can also participate in a variety of activities, such as graduate program conferences, magazine clubs, and seminars by leading researchers from within and outside of NIG. Japanese classes are also taught.
